GALvanize New York Giants Camp Reporter

I was one of 21 female sports journalists selected as GALvanize Reporters to help tell the stories of the 2019 New York Giants’ rookie class.

The experience is an exclusive camp for women in the industry that focuses on building stronger player-reporter relationships, overcoming hurdles, improving storytelling and interview skills, and ultimately gaining the trust of professional athletes who haven’t yet had the chance to shape how their stories are told.

GALvanize was created by veteran NFL on FOX sideline reporter Laura Okmin. She hosts the two-day camp and begins to break down your wall the second you walk into the room. She pushes each reporter to look inside themselves to really discover and know who they are and not just what they do. She transitions that into approaching interviews in the same say – finding the who, not just the do.

We went to the Giants’ training facility and surprised the rookies during their training camp. They had no idea they were about to embark on this particular journey with us over the next couple of days. We met with our players and learned as much about them as possible before heading back to our hotel to do more research and figure out how to best help them tell their stories.

It was intensely long rollercoaster of a day, but so exactly what all us reporters needed. It started with us each sharing our struggles in the industry and learning how best to support and build each other up and it ended with us doing what we do best – working hard to make sure we do another person’s story justice.

The following day we shot standups and interviewed our rookies in front of the rest of the group and video cameras. The energy in that room with the reporters and players all cheering for and supporting each other was an experience I’ll never forget.

If I could attend GALvanize every single year, I would. If you’re a woman in the sports industry and share any responsibility in telling the stories of the players, team, brand – I highly encourage you to check out GALvanize.

On a side note, I also had the honor of being the first ever pregnant GALvanize reporter! I was incredibly exhausted during our marathon two days, but I’m so happy I chose to push myself in this moment. I ended up growing more than I could’ve ever imagined! This little one now has the entire GALvanize family rooting him or her on.

Thank you Laura for your continuing guidance and insight, for providing a space that’s safe to be vulnerable in, and for challenging us GALvanizers to take gigantic leaps outside of our comfort zones.

I had the privilege of meeting and learning more about Giants rookie Reggie White, Jr. When he got to training camp he was given Odell Beckham, Jr.’s former number. He explains what it felt like when after the first practice he realized social media had blown up because of it. He talks about his desire to inspire the youth of Baltimore and shares about the special relationship he has with his mom.
